CarbonTrust
The Carbon Trust is a UK company that supports organisations globally as they accelerate towards Net Zero. From target setting, Net Zero pathways, assurance and footprinting, to policy advice, strategy setting and programme delivery.
Brief
CarbonTrust approached Malaika Media to document the success achieved by Good Natures Agro, Good Nature Agro (GNA) is a for-profit social enterprise in Zambia that started in 2014 with a mission to improve farmer incomes through the production of legume seeds, (a crop grown during the rainy season).
With funding from the Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) programme, in 2022 the company embarked on a project – Multiply Harvests and Transforming Lives through Solar Powered Irrigation (MHTL) – that aims to introduce solar-powered borehole and irrigation systems to allow farmers to diversify into new high-value crops and grow their earnings.
This video was being produced as part of a series of videos about companies funded through PREO in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria.
SERVICES
Production
After a series of pre-production meetings to determine the creative vision, we moved into discussions with Good Nature Agro to find the perfect timing when the team at GNA would be installing solar system as well as when farmers would be preparing, planting, irrigating and harvesting . After numerous meetings, we set dates and we contacted a fixer in Zambia to support with clearing our camera gear at the customs and get filming permits for the Photographer and Producer. The challenge we experienced was majorly on accordomation in Chipata a place we were to station during the week's shoot. During that week The Ngoni people had the N'cwala ceremony which takes place every year on the last Saturday of February at Mtenguleni Village in Chipata so all roads were leading to Southern Zambia. This made accomodation scarce and very expensive for the crew.
To tell the best story we shot different activities during during times of the day for expample we shot solar installations during the morning and eveneing to have a golden hour looking footage. And we shot farmersirrigatinig during the midday sun for the solar system to work well.
One of our favorite scenes were captured during the maize harvesting. Each member of the family was busy doing what they do best as the photographer and videographers were picking out different shots.
The Result
Despite the formidable hurdles of languages, locations, and logistical intricacies, our collaboration with The Carbon Trust resulted in an awe-inspiring collection of stories that transcended borders. By tackling the project with an immersive, hands-on methodology, we aligned with the client’s vision and managed to uphold consistency from production to post-production.
A single point of contact empowered efficient communication throughout the project, while our expansive African network enabled us to deftly navigate cultural nuances and diverse landscapes. The final edits, enriched with translations and subtitles, facilitated widespread engagement, making the stories accessible to a global audience.
The project’s commercial success was made possible through our centralised production and post-production resource. This pivotal resource simplified the complexities of global coordination and creative orchestration, allowing The Carbon Trust's expansive vision to be realised with finesse.
