Client Case Study
Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PREEEP)
CLIENT
GIZ
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, often simply shortened to GIZ, is the main German development agency. It is headquartered in Bonn and Eschborn and provides services in the field of international development cooperation and international education work.
Brief
Uganda is richly endowed with natural resources. In terms of energy, the country has abundant biomass, including large quantities of non-woody biomass and water resources. It also has excellent potential as far as the generation of solar, geothermal and wind energy is concerned. Water and biomass make the biggest contributions to the energy demands of Uganda’s population. The unsustainable and inefficient use of the available resources has, however, left the country with an insufficient energy supply.
Therefore the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned the project Promotion Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PREEEP) with co funding from The German Climate Technology Initiative (DKTI), the Dutch German-Norwegian-Swiss Partnership “Energising Development” (EnDev), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety (BMUV), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the European Union (EU)
GIZ partnered with Malaika Media to create compelling, thought-provoking documentary videos and photography that delve into the energy projects. The video and photo content was to be shared with donors, Government and other stakeholders, to inform them about the programme’s developments, interventions, and achievements, as well as spotlight relevant partners and/or activities where necessary/applicable with best practices, impact or success stories, and lessons learned related to the thematic objective of promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the sector.
The Challenge
PREEEP footprint across Northern and Central Uganda meant engaging beneficiaries and various commissions from all these areas. The activity project was to go on for the next 100 days. This necessitated understanding varied cultural contexts, while ensuring the project objective remains undiluted. The project beneficiaries included business persons, refugees, entreprenuers,
SERVICES
Production
The process began with extensive pre-production meetings, where we dove into the intricacies of the project alongside the communication team at GIZ/PREEEP. Malaika Media collaborated well to plan, coordinate, and script the videos. The production included filming the commissioning of pro minigrids, conducting insightful interviews with Ministry of Energy officials, entreprenuers and film testimonials from the community members. Along side the video production, we were tasked to also provide documentary photography on the project. We also carried out photography training to GIZ teams.
Throughout the project we shot our video using the Panasonic Lumix S1 H which provided us with hi quality 4K footage. To achieve establishment shots of the villages and solar minigrids, we used a drone.
The Photographer worked with a writer to indentify the stories and also caption the photos after editing. We made sure that every subject in the photos signed a consent form as its mandated by law.
In post-production, we dove into the footage we gathered, optimizing every frame to paint the best visual narrative, and weaving the interview highlights with scripted narration. We worked with a talented team of editors, writers, and graphic designers to bring the films together by custom-designing motion graphics, writing and recording compelling voice-over, and creating a cohesive look and feel to the piece as a whole.
The Result
Having worked on this assignment for 2 years, there were lots of lessons learnt. The effect of Covid19 affected our shooting schedules and we had numerous contract postponement. Nevertheless, we managed to finalise the project assingnment and the objectives were meant.
The final films products were short 3-5 minutes, professional, catchy and expertly produced, ready for dissemination. The videos covered the purpose/goals of PREEEP programme, testimonials, and most important achievements with facts and figures. The videos had a natural flow and resonated on how the programme impacted lives and how PREEEP is supporting Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development with its commissions to promote use of Renewable Energy (RE) and Electronic Evolution (EE) Technologies and promote energy efficient practices.
