The Children’s Surgical Hospital in Uganda: A “Scandalously Beautiful” Dream

His notable buildings include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Shard in London, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, İstanbul Modern in Istanbul and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1998.

Brief

Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) designed the Children's Surgical Hospital in Entebbe Uganda and the hospital is run by Emergecy an NGO based in Italy. This state od art Hospital is of strategic importance for the entire country, having tripled the number of surgical beds available in Uganda for children. It’s therefore become a point of reference for surgical treatment right across Africa. The facility will also train a new generation of doctors and nurses, who’ll be able to raise the standard of pediatric care throughout Uganda and, possibly, beyond.

The Challenge

The Project was constructed on the shores of Lake Victoria which is adjacent to the Entebbe International airport and the Military barracks. This made it challenging for drone filming as its a restricted area. Nevertheless, the Malaika Media team managed to capture interior and exterior aerial photographs as well as drone photographs of the hospital.

Production

After the creative brief, Malaika Media team scheduled 2 days to capture the interior and exterior of the hospital. Malaika Media team worked closed with the Emergecy, RPBW and the Ministry of Defence to secure a drone filming permit. With the letter from the Ministry of Defence, DJI was able to unlock the drone which was used to capture the exterior building during different time of the day.

Enphasis was put on the local materials used for the connstruction which included rammed earth which is commonly used in Africa time and memorial. More detail was put on the roofing which housed hundreds of solar panels to provide reliable solar energy to the hospital. The interior also housed hundreds of state of art equiment and accomodation.
