THE FOUR PARTS OF VIDEO PRODUCTION

PRE-PRODUCTION

Defining the project goals and objectives:

In the pre-production phase, it is essential to clearly identify the film production goals and objectives of the video project. This involves understanding the target audience, determining the key message, and establishing the desired outcomes. By defining these elements, the video production agency can tailor their approach and ensure that the final product aligns with the client’s vision.

Storyboarding and scriptwriting:

Storyboarding and scriptwriting are vital steps in pre-production that help visualise the video’s narrative and structure. Storyboarding involves creating a series of visual sketches or illustrations that outline the sequence of shots and camera angles. Scriptwriting, on the other hand, focuses on crafting a compelling script that effectively communicates the intended message, incorporating dialogue, narration, and key visuals.

Planning logistics and scheduling:

Effective planning of logistics and scheduling is crucial for a smooth video production process. This involves determining shooting locations, acquiring necessary permits, securing talent or actors, arranging props and set designs, and establishing a detailed production timeline. Careful attention to these logistical aspects ensures that the necessary resources are in place and that the production schedule is followed.

PRODUCTION

Equipment needed for shooting videos:

The production phase involves using various equipment to capture high-quality footage. This includes cameras, lenses, tripods, stabilisers, lighting equipment, and audio recording devices. If you decide to engage a video agency they should specify that they’re a full service video production company and will be able to provide high level equipment and a qualified production team.

Camera and lighting techniques:

Skilled videographers utilise different camera techniques, such as framing, composition, and camera movements, to capture visually appealing shots. Additionally, proper lighting techniques are employed to enhance the overall visual quality and create the desired atmosphere for the production video.

Capturing high quality audio:

Sound is a crucial aspect of video production. During the production phase, the team ensures clear and high quality audio recording, whether it’s capturing dialogue, ambient sounds, or music. This may involve using external microphones, sound mixers, and other audio recording equipment.

POST PRODUCTION

Editing software and tools: video editing software

Post production involves editing the footage to create a polished, cohesive and high quality video. Video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, is used to assemble the clips, trim unnecessary footage, and add transitions and effects.

Colour grading and visual effects:

Colour grading helps establish the desired look and mood of the video by adjusting colour, contrast, and saturation. Visual effects can also be added during post-production to enhance the visual appeal and bring the video to life.

Sound design and audio editing:

Sound design involves adding and editing audio elements, such as background music, sound effects, and voiceovers, to enhance the overall audio experience. Audio editing techniques are applied to ensure clarity and balance between different audio sources.

DISTRIBUTION

Formatting videos for different platforms and devices:

Once the video is finalised, it needs to be formatted appropriately for different platforms and devices. This may involve optimising the video for web streaming, mobile devices, or specific social media platforms.

Implementing content strategy and marketing plans:

Effective distribution of the video requires a well-thought-out content strategy and marketing plan. This involves identifying the target audience, selecting the appropriate distribution channels, and determining the best time to release the video to maximise engagement and reach.

Maximising reach through social media and digital marketing:

Social media platforms and digital marketing techniques play a crucial role in reaching a wider audience. Leveraging these channels allows for increased visibility and engagement with the video content. Content production and social media video are services that the best video production companies now offer as standard.

FINALLY, THE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT FOR VIDEO PRODUCTION PART!

Cameras and lenses:

Cameras are the primary tools used in video production (obviously). High-quality cameras, such as DSLRs or professional-grade video cameras, are essential for capturing crisp and clear footage. We currently use a RED Komodo 6K camera as our main camera on most projects, but there are so many other great budget options available. Sony’s ‘Alpha’ mirrorless camera range is a great place to start, we use an A7 III regularly as our B camera.

Different lenses offer various focal lengths and shooting capabilities, allowing videographers to achieve specific visual effects and perspectives. There’s no real go-to lens that we can recommend, because there are so many different lenses for so many different situations and types of videography. Your best bet is to Google your camera type and what you’re looking to shoot, eg. ‘Best Lens for Canon M50 to shoot in low-light’.

Lighting equipment:

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood, highlighting subjects, and ensuring optimal visibility in video production. Professional lighting equipment, including studio lights, softboxes, and reflectors, helps control the intensity, direction, and quality of light, resulting in well-lit and visually pleasing shots. Again, the type of film you’re trying to make will dictate the lighting setup you need. There are various different lighting setups to create different moods and effects, so do some research to find the one that works best for you.

Audio recording devices and microphones:
Audio recording devices and microphones

Clear and high-quality audio is vital for any video production. Audio recording devices, such as external recorders or audio interfaces, capture sound with better fidelity and control. Additionally, using high-quality microphones, such as lavalier microphones for interviews or shotgun microphones for on-location recording, ensures optimal audio capture.

Tripods, stabilisers, and other camera support tools:
Tripods, stabilisers, and other camera support tools

Camera stability is crucial for smooth and professional-looking footage. Tripods provide a stable base for static shots, while camera stabilisers, such as gimbals or steadicams, allow for smooth and steady camera movements. You can get pretty decent tripods from the likes of Amazon, just ensure they’re made of something sturdier than plastic. You’ll be looking at paying £50+ for a good quality tripod and around £250 for an entry level gimbal and anything from £1,000+ for a professional gimbal. Other camera support tools, like sliders and jibs, offer additional creative possibilities for capturing dynamic shots.

Editing software and hardware:
Editing software and hardware

Editing software is an essential part of the post-production process. Professional video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, provides a range of tools for trimming, arranging, and enhancing video clips. Most of these software companies now charge monthly subscription fees for the software, so they’re more affordable now than ever. Additionally, powerful hardware, including high-performance computers or workstations, allows for efficient editing and rendering of video projects. However, you can still run most editing software on virtually any modern computer as long as it has 16GB or more RAM.

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS TO WATCH IN VIDEO PRODUCTION

Advancements in camera technology and resolution:

The field of video production is constantly evolving, and one notable trend is the continuous advancements in camera technology. Higher resolutions, such as 4K and even 8K, offer stunning visual clarity and detail. Additionally, cameras with improved dynamic range and low-light performance enable videographers to capture breathtaking visuals in various lighting conditions.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications:

VR and AR technologies have gained significant traction in recent years, opening up new possibilities for immersive video experiences. Video production companies are exploring the creative potential of VR and AR, creating interactive and engaging content that allows viewers to step into virtual worlds or overlay digital elements onto the real world.

Live streaming capabilities:

Live streaming has become increasingly popular across social media platforms, allowing businesses and individuals to broadcast real-time events and engage with their audience in a more direct way. Video production companies are incorporating live streaming capabilities into their services, enabling clients to reach a wider audience and create engaging live experiences.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in post-production:

AI-powered tools and automation are revolutionising the post-production phase of video production. AI algorithms can analyse footage, perform tasks like video editing, colour correction, and even generate subtitles or captions. This streamlines the editing process, saving time and enhancing efficiency while maintaining high-quality results.

Incorporating these technology trends into video production strategies opens up new creative possibilities and enhances the overall quality and impact of video content. By leveraging these advancements, businesses can create engaging and immersive videos that captivate their audience and elevate their brand presence.
