In video production, a gaffer is the head electrician who oversees all aspects of lighting on set.
Roles of a gaffer #
- Planning & Design: Collaborating with the director of photography (DoP) to understand the desired visual style and create a lighting plan that achieves it. This may involve selecting appropriate lighting fixtures, determining their placement, and managing the overall lighting setup during the entire video production.
- Equipment & Crew: Managing the lighting equipment inventory, ensuring its proper functioning, and overseeing the lighting crew. This includes tasks like assigning duties to electricians and grips (who handle rigging and diffusion) to achieve the desired lighting effects.
- Technical Expertise: Having a deep understanding of various lighting techniques, equipment functionality, and electrical safety protocols. This ensures the crew works efficiently and adheres to safety regulations.
- Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Being able to troubleshoot lighting issues, adjust setups on the fly, and adapt to changing shooting conditions or creative requests.
- Communication & Collaboration: Effectively communicating with the DoP, director, and other crew members to ensure everyone is on the same page regarding the lighting design and its execution.
